Why is Hong Kong called Hong Kong?
Hong is 香 in Cantonese, meaning fragrant; Kong is 港, meaning harbour.
It is said that this place produced a tree called 香樹, meaning fragrant tree. But this tree no long exists because of frequent felling. So the place still retains the same old name, but because of lacking substance, it is just an empty name.
