vegetable同vegetables有咩分別?

表面上, vegetable 是個很容易的英文單字: vegetable 和 vegetables 的分別就是單數和眾數的分別. 但應用此字時要小心出錯:

1)
中、英文表達菜之「份量」的方式和習慣是很不同的. 香港人常說一棵、兩棵菜; 但我們不可以用 a vegetable, two vegetables 來表達上述意思. 若說 「two vegetables」, 西方人或誤以為你指「兩個植物品種」. 另外, 英文通常以重量來描述菜的份量的 (kilo.), 或只空泛的說 some vegetables.

Tomatoes and potatoes are my favourite vegetables.
The vegetable that I hate the most is the cabbage.

2)
fruit 和 vegetable 表面上是類同的, 皆是食物品種的統稱, 但要注意的是, vegetable (蔬菜的統稱) 只可以作可數名詞, 故多以眾數出現; fruit 則有時作可數, 有時不可:

Vegetarians eat fruit and vegetables only.
Apples and Oranges are my favourite fruits.

3)
vegetable 也有另一個意思的, 就是「植物人」:

After the traffic accident, the severe brain damage has turned him into a vegetable.

4)
也可作為一個貶義詞來描述一個人甚麼也不作無所事事:

Do you want to stay home doing nothing meaningful like a vegetable?

1) 例句中, The vegetable that I hate the most is the cabbage 不是指某一件植物, 而是整個品種.

2) 例句中, 留意 fruit 是不可加s 的, 因此字描述「所有生果品種」時, 必須當不可數名詞 -- 這是英語又一易令人出錯的地方.

The addditional information on the use of FRUIT & FRUITS is especially helpful.
This is often more of a problem than vegetable & vegetables.

vegetable = 蔬菜

vegetables 是 vegetable 的眾數/複數

表示有很多蔬菜/很多不同種類的蔬菜
