I M Pei was born on April 26 !917. He is an American architect of Chinese descent. He pursued his studies in architecture successively at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Harvard University. He founded his architectural firm in 1955, and then retired in 1990.

He has created numerous important architectural works, notably the "Handsome?" (I have borrowed this from the first respondent because I do not know its name) Art Museum in Japan, the Bank of China building in Central, Hong Kong, the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal, and the glass pyramid at the entrance to the Louvre Museum, etc.

I M Pei has been personally honoured by innumerable prestigious awards, including the American Architectural Society's Gold Award in 1979, the French Architectural Society's Gold Award in 1981, the Japanese Emperor's Award in 1989, the 5th Pulitzk (?) Prize in 1983, and the Medal of Freedom awarded by President Reagan.

I M Pei staunchly believes in that architecture should not be something that yields to trendy expectations, or to rely on fleeting gimmicks just to curry favour from the general populace. He considers architecture a grand enterprise, one that has to bear lasting societal and historical responsibilities. By tenaciously studying and experimenting with different styles, spaces, building materials and techniques, he has created works that are more diversified, and better still. He has never explained his creations, nor has he detailed his design concepts with pen and paper; he simply believes that the buildings speak best for themselves.
