The pH of a bicarbonate-carbonic acid buffer is 8.50. Calculate the ratio of the concentration of carbonic acid (H2CO3) to that of the bicarbonate ion (HCO3-).

H2CO3(aq) + H2O(l) = HCO3-(aq) + H3O+
Ka = 4.3 x 10-7
pKa = -log(4.3 x 10-7) = 6.37

pH = pKa - log([H2CO3]/[HCO3-])
log([H2CO3]/[HCO3-]) = pKa - pH = 6.37 - 8.50 = -2.13
Hence, [H2CO3]/[HCO3-] = 10-2.13 = 0.00741
