benzene and toluene form an ideal solution. consider a solution of benzene and toluene prepare at 25 C. assume the mole fraction of benzene and toluene in vapor phase are equal, calculate the composition of the solution. at 25 C the vapor pressure of benzene and toluene are 95 and 28 torr.

(This type of solution is out of the HKAL syllabus since 2007.)

Mole fraction of benzene in the solution = XB
Mole fraction of toluene in the solution = XT = 1 - XB

By Raoult's law:
Mole fraction of benzene in the vapour XB' = XBPBo = 95XB torr
Mole fraction of benzene in the vapour XT' = XTPTo = 28(1- XB) torr

XB' = XT'
95XB = 28(1 - XB)
XB = 0.228

Mole fraction of benzene in the solution XB = 0.228
Mole fraction of toluene in the solution XT = 1 - 0.228 = 0.772
