Compulsive shopping is a kind of compulsive-obsessive disorder, of which a patient is driven by anxiety to do certain things and is unable to stop doing them as in the cases of compulsive gambler, arsonist, or stealer. 25%to 50% of the patients are also found to have experienced emotional depression at least once in their lifetime.
Researches in the west show that compulsive shoppers find it even more difficult to keep the compulsion under control during festive seasons such as Christmas, when sales are on.
The emotional statisfaction of shopping often clouds the judgement of patients about their own problem. That is why therapy is concentrated on inducing a change in their mindset. Cognitve behavioural therapy will follow to encourage the patients to recognise what has gone wrong with their spending behaviour and the danger it may bring, and to seek the way out.
