I think you say is Hi8 format... after you take the video to Hi8 tape.. you can just use the adaptor to enlarge the size to normal VHS.. and just play it in the VHS player...
If you are referring to consumer-grade mini DV, then the closest match is Video 8 (and the higher definition Hi-8). VHS-C (S-VHS-C) was its direct competitor.
Note that there are NO VHS adapters for Video 8 format. Only VHS-C formats are available with a full VHS size adapter for playback on VCRs.
Shortly after DV (mini DV) the Video 8 format has been "digitised" so that it can record digital video just like a DV tape does. However, only Hi-8 MP/ME tapes can be used. This "renewed" format survived for a few years and is now pretty much defunct.
