這是道一禪師解釋的平常心，在這裡平常心的具體含意是許多人所誤解以為，平常心就是普通人的日常心態。所謂平常之心實際上應是不追求奇特與玄奧，能在簡樸的日常生活中體認簡單的生活與生命真相之心的原態。平常心不會在煩惱思緒中妄想癡迷而迷失自己而在最淺顯普通之處，顯現智慧與才能之變化。雜記中曾有一段記載：一位上京參加科舉考試的學生，由於在荒郊野外長途跋涉，非常疲倦乾渴，來到一間荒涼的寺院，住持為他送上一杯簡單的清茶，學生一飲而盡，頓時覺得茶味如甘露，彷彿是天下最美味的飲品。後來他上京應試，一舉成名當了大官。他飲盡天下茗品，卻念念不忘那杯美味的清茶，於是回到舊地品茶，一飲之下猛然發覺茶味變了不在有那般甘香！他問了住持，住持說：茶雖一致，人卻不同。在這世上許多事情不都如此，成敗好壞、對錯美醜，只是不同心境所造成的分別，若能保持一種平和一致謙恭的心態，平常中觀照省思自我心性之態度，眼前的世界就能顯現出真實的面目。

He made a long and wearisome journey in wilderness, so that he was extremely tired and thirsty. Then he arrived a bleak temple. The abbot delivered a cup of simple green tea for him, the student tossed down and immediately thought that the flavor of tea was like manna, It is the world most delicacy drinks as if. Afterwards he went to the capital to take an exam. He became famous overnight and worked as the high official. He drank all of the tea in the world completely, and never forgot the delicacy of that cup of green tea, therefore he returned back to the old place to taste the tea. He suddenly detected that the flavor of tea had changed and did not have the fragrant! He asked the abbot, he said, 'Although the taste of tea is the same, your character is actually different. In this world many things are like that. The success or failure, right or wrong, beautiful or ugly, is only the distinction which the different mood creates. If you can maintain a kind of gentle consistent and courteous point of view, observe and introspect the manner of the self-disposition in the ordinary, the present world will appear the real appearance.
