Ampacity is the ability to carry an electrical load over a distance, in this case 12 volts direct current. DC current doesn't travel long distance well as it encounters too much resistance in wire over long runs, requiring either a larger cable size, or higher voltages.

The SMALLER the wire, the more resistance it has to a load. LARGER wire has less resistance. Connecting two sets of jumper cables is OK, since it's not used over a long period of time and the total length is not much. They will heat up faster than a single set of the proper size for the run, and they are certainly better than not getting a jump at all.

Long term - buy the longest, largest gauge cables you can, they will last for decades. The cheap sets are just too short, too low quality, and too small to keep doing the job for very long. If you're having problems with cars that need jump starts, or just helping out on the road, a good set of cables is far better and will outlast numerous cars.

Remember ohms law, E = I x R and it has to stay in balance. The longer the cable is, the more resistance it has, which will drop the voltage and amps at the other end of it.

Bottom line is there is a practical limit on the length of a set of jumper cables, and what you buy is what you get.

Hey if ur in a pinch, ive used everything from electric house wire,to coat hangers, and if it's stuff with metal bumpers, ive pulled one vehichle up to touch another,to make ground, then u only gotta have, one cable or wire for the hot (positive),,,ive jumped motorcycle little 14 guage wire, thing is the longer the jump the bigger the wire needs to be,hooking to sets of jumper cables together is no problem,,let ur dead vehichle charge for a good while, before attempting to start it..

No they are a set length. You can buy the longest pair, and pull as close as possible to what is being jumped.

do not hook two sets together. the contact resistance will be a problem. jumping a car uses alot of amps with a low voltage. heat will build up due to the resistance of the cables.

the longest i have seen are 2 gauge about 20 feet.

if you need longer, consider a battery jumper, the self contained battery with short cables you carry to the disabled car.

Extended? I've seen them built of welding cable. You can buy it in any length you desire. WARNING--be prepared to shell out a large amount of money! ;-)=

How long do you need? You can buy them up to around 15 feet long. or you can make your own from commercial wire and clamps.

Just remember that the longer you make the power go, the warmer the wire will become (thats how they make electric heaters... long - thin wire). So you need thicker cable wire.

Connecting two thin gauge wire jumper cables is prob. not going to be too safe for any length of time.

The cables usually are at a set length for a reason, just get the longest set you can find

Don't do it...The cable is essentially a big resistor...More or thicker cable, more resistance...If the cable is longer or thicker, the more the voltage drops from the supply battery...At the receiving battery terminal there will not be enough voltage for you to use.

just connect two sets of wires together

Buy another pair and connect them together.
