Assuming that you are using Windows.

If the file is not so important, after delete it, go to recycle bin to remove that file.

But evening doing so, someone can read the harddisk byte by byte to [ construct ] the data again. It is heard that, even if you damage the harddisk by a hammer, some well trained person can still read the data from the harddisk byte by byte to [ re-build ] the information.

So, the most safe method is like this :

After you have removed files in the recycle bin to free the storage space, copy a very large un-important file (e.g. a movie file) to a temp directory again and again until the hard disk is full. Then delete that movie file(s).

Since the original storage space of your file is eat up by that movie file(s), it disappear from this world forever.
