Can a "United States of China" be established?

Is it possible to establish a "United States of China" modelled after the United States of America, to eventually establish a united, democratic republic. In this way Taiwan can be united with mainland China under the title "State of Taiwan"? As the Chinese authories aim to achieve the reunification of China and in 2001, Chinese president Jiang Zemin made a comment that a united China can adopt a new national name and flag.
Can this proposal work to re-unify China under a single national government and successfully resolve the current relationship between China and Taiwan?

I do not want you to be unhappy, but I think the possibility is in close proximity with zero.
First thing first, China is far more complicated that most Westerners think. They have 56 nationalities, 23 proviincesd, 5 autonomous regions: Tibet, XinJiang, NingXia, Inside Mongolia, GuangXi, and 4 direct governed municipalities:BeiJIng, TianJing,ChongQin,and ShangHai, and finally 2 special administrative regions: Hong Kong and Macao. If the Chinese governent grante TaiWan a state title, they have give all the provinces and autonomous regions a state titles, and then what happen to direct governed municipalities, and special administrative regions. Tell you the truth, TaiWan does not want to come back is not because they hate Mainland or the CPC, it is because there is always a small group of people tries to sperate TaiWan, and maybe dreaming of joining USA. Once you grant TaiWan this title, this group people will become even more rampant.
Second thing is that the CPC does not want to hand over the power that they are having right now, and see China goes to somewhat turmoil which you can see all over the world in teh developing countries. Once become united states, each states has to do own legislation, revise whole systems, I just can not even think about it.
What China can do is to provide one of three ways: TaiWan come back as a province just like hundreds years ago; or China will grand TaiWan a title of special adaministrative region, this possibility is even very small;the last one, once there are forgeign forces support TaiWan to seperate form China, it is going to be a war, that is the worst thing to see.

Hope help you clarify a bit.

While that would appear to be the eventual goal of The People's Republic of China, Taiwan, i.e. The Republic of China, refuses to even acknowledge any claim that the PRC has on mainland china, and fervently proclaims that they are the true masters of all Chinese territory. Until they can resolve that issue, Taiwan will continue to be a "rogue" territory of the PRC. For the Democratic part, China has flourished under communism, and anything less than total collapse similar to that of the Soviet Union will be likely to bring about a democratic China. So unless something drastic occurs, it is unlikely that a resolution will be reached any time soon.

Some of us intelligent Americans don't want anything more to do with Voodoo Republic's of/by/for the Fascist Few!

So what ever sweet trade or monetary deals are cut between USA & China's Business/Gov't are not that of either people's majority! I say put the deal makers on a island to collect/fight-it-out/or oppress each other!
