The Children's Peace Statue is establishmed in memory of Sadako, a school girl who died from radiation-induced disease after the atomic bombing in Hiroshima. Sakako made thousands of paper crane according to Japanese tradition to pray for victory in her battle against the disease. After her death, the statue was set up. Visitors usually bring paper cranes to site in memory of Sadako and other children who were killed in the bombing.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is located on an islet in the middle of a river in Hiroshima, Japan. The site used to be a vibrant community, but was razed to the ground in seconds during the atomic bombing in August 1945. In the Park, there are several museums where exhibits and information in relation to the atomic bombing are displayed. There are also several monuments established in memory of people who were killed.
