1.
The length of one side of a square is measured using a ruler, correct to the nearest cm. Given that the relative error of the measurement is 1/40, find the measured length.

2.
Chales uses a ruler with 0.1 cm marking to measure the length and width of an Octopus Card. He finds that the length and the width are 8.5 cm and 5.4 cm respectively.

1.
The maximun absolute error =(1/2)(1)=1/2 cm
the relative error of the measurement
=The maximun absolute error/the measured length.

(1/2)/the measured length=1/40
the measured length=20cm
2.
The maximun absolute error =(0.1/2)=0.05 cm
the upper limit of the actual length =8.5+0.05=8.55 cm
the upper limit of the actual width=5.4+0.05=5.45 cm
