1880年，英軍於北角設立炮台，開始了北角的歷史。當時北角並無民居，但由於水深岸高，所以吸引了輪船公司及倉庫碼頭的興建，而皇家香港遊艇會初期的總部亦在1900年代於北角成立。

1919年，香港電燈公司關閉位於灣仔的發電廠，於北角興建全新發電廠，以應付需求大增的電力需求。1921年，當地開始興建糖廠，然而因省港大罷工影響，其後改為發展住宅區，即現在春秧街一帶。1935年，英皇道通車，帶旺該區的發展，使北角成為新興工業區。

北角於第二次世界大戰前人口不多，但戰後隨著大批來自上海的新移民湧入，人口開始變得愈來愈多。新移民的人口主要集中在春秧街、渣華道、馬寶道等地，多居住於高級的新型樓宇。隨著1957年北角邨落成及北角碼頭啟用，北角更為繁盛。到了1980年代，新移民人口變成以福建人為主。
