What is Town Gas?

Town gas is a common domestic fuel in Hong Kong. Town gas is the name given to any gaseous fuel which is made and piped to users locally. In Hong Kong, the town gas is made from the fraction from petroleum called naphtha. Naphtha is a mixture of alkanes, mainly pentane and hexane. Naphtha is imported to Hong Kong mainly from Singapore.

Liquid naphtha is turned into vapour by heat. The vapour is mixed with steam and passed through a hot nickel catalyst at 700 degree Celsius. For example pentane reacts with steam to form carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, depending on the amount of steam present.
