一般寵物店售賣的狗糧已提供足夠營養給犬隻。應向購買寵物店查詢餵飼資料(如牌子及種類)，犬主應為您的幼犬每天提供3-4餐餵飼。幼犬腸胃較敏感，除幼犬糧和犬隻專用小食，不應給予別的東西。

幼犬體溫較成犬低，平均為攝氏96-100度，所以剛出生的幼犬(首十天)理想室溫大約攝氏26-28度。成長階段或以上的狗正常體溫為大約攝氏100-102.5度

總括分兩大原因，其一是幼犬在出牙及換牙時(大約四個月大)口腔感不適及痕癢，咬硬物可減輕其不適及幫助換牙。其二是情緒行為表現，寵物不懂與人類用言語溝通，往往因長時間獨處而感寂寞，因而胡亂咬東西發洩及向犬主表示其不滿。犬主應給予幼犬不同種類犬用玩具及咬物

從小讓幼犬明確知道牠應在那裡上廁所，例如狗廁盆或狗籠等。幼犬通常在餐後、睡醒及玩耍後上廁所，犬主應指引幼犬在指定地方大小便，若牠做對了應輕聲稱讚及予以小食獎勵，相反地牠在別處大小便，不應責打牠，這只會令牠害怕在你面前上廁所


狗的毛髮因生陳代謝關係而脫落，一年四季也會轉換毛髮。每天替你的寵物梳理毛髮，可除去死毛和皮膚上的皮垢，付與合適沖涼液和適量洗澡可減低脫毛情況和鬆弛神經。正常的換毛平均分佈在身體上，若出現痕癢或局佈性脫毛，寵物可能患上皮膚問題或皮膚寄生蟲等。


狗指甲的上半部(近腳趾位或呈淡粉色甲位)長有血管和神經，而下半部(指甲彎位)並無神經感覺組織，犬主可定期修剪爪尖部份，寵物不會感到疼痛。若指甲過長可導至血管及神經伸延，當修剪指甲時容易流血。每2-3星期替您的寵物修剪指甲和適量運動可減低指甲長度和鋒利感。
