上古：有說法說堯舜時期已有類似春節的慶祝活動，但是未成規模。
殷商：春節起源於殷商時期祭神、祭祖活動。
西周：春節期間開始有農業慶祝活動。
漢朝：形成正式春節禮儀。
漢朝：開始有爆竹（燒竹子）。
漢朝：團拜禮儀。官員朝賀天子。
魏晉：開始有鞭炮。
魏晉：開始有守歲習俗。
五代·後蜀：開始有春聯。蜀太子題寫的「天垂余慶，地接長春」是中國最早的一副春聯。
宋朝：開始使用火藥製成的鞭炮。
民國：將元旦定義為西曆01月01日，將春節定義為農曆正月初一。
民國：曾試圖禁止人民慶祝農曆新年
文革：文革期間曾經制止工人歇班
過年習俗源自何時很難考究，不過一般認為起源於中國殷商時期的年頭歲末祭神、祭祖活動（臘祭）；一說最早在堯舜時就有過春節的風俗。農曆的正月是一年的開始，而正月上旬或中旬，大部分情況正好是春季的開始（少部分情況立春是在農曆臘月下旬）。節日的時間相信和農業勞作影響有關；甲骨文和金文中的年字都有穀穗成熟的形象。農曆一年的最後一天（月大為30日，月小29日），稱之為「除夕」，除夕晚上全家人團圓吃年夜飯（農曆一年中最後一頓飯），年夜飯以後有發壓歲錢和熬年夜（守歲）的習俗，表示從農曆上一年的最後一天守到下一年的第一天。
不同時期春節的時間也不一樣。夏朝為歲首；商朝為四季大祀中的冬祀。也有說古代所謂「春節」，意思是春天的節序，曾經還專指二十四節氣中的立春，有時也泛指整個春季。漢武帝時推行太陽曆，才明確規定夏曆的正月初一為歲首，以之為夏曆新年。[1]
