Shau Kei Wan Main Street East is the main road in the Shau Kei Wan area, Eastern District of Hong Kong. The Kam Wa Street laid at its north end, and the A Kung Ngam Road and Tam Kung Temple Road at the south. Shau Kei Wan Main Street East was used to be the centre of the area. On both sides of the street, there are many residential houses and commercial shops, including eateries. At the midpoint of the Shau Kei Wan Main Street East, just opposed to the Shau Kei Wan Government School, there is a hundred-year-old banyan fig, which is retained upon request of the public when the street was expanded.
History
Before the 19 century, it was the seashore of Shau Kei Wan. In 1860, in order to ward off hidden pirates, the government converted the seashore into a road, constructed houses on either sides, and named it ‘Shau Kei Wan Main Street East’.
