There's a few differences here and there, mostly in spelling and what they call certain things (Boot/trunk, torch/flashlight, etc) but there are some grammar differences too. For example, the American English drops the u's from a lot of words that British English use 'em in, like 'colour' and 'favourite'. A grammatical difference is that American English put commas before words like 'but' and 'and' but British English doesn't do that because the comma is "implied" in a sense. Either way though, if you can understand one; you'll be able to understand the other. EDIT: I've never had trouble understanding American accents, they sound a little funny to me but coherent nonetheless.
