OPTION c.

Put in each value for x (example for a)

(2+2)^2 = 16 OK
(4+2)^2 = 36 NOT OK

so its not (a)

Do the same for the rest and if you find one where both numbers work its okay.

Alternatively

(x+2)^2 = 16
(x^2+4x +4 = 16
x^2 +4x -12 = 0

Factorise

(x + 6) (x -2) = o

x - 2 = 0

therefore x =2

x +6 = 0

therefore x = -6

so answer is x = 2, -6

(x + 2)^2 = 16
x + 2 = √16
x + 2 = 4
x = 4 - 2
x = 2
(answer d)

take sqrt of both sides
x+2= 4
x=4-2
x=2

The answer is c

x^2 + 4x -12 = 0 which factorises to 2, -6

(x + 2)^2 = 16

You can do this two ways:

First way:

(x + 2)^2 = (x + 2)*(x + 2) = x^2 + 4x + 4

x^2 + 4x + 4 = 16

x^2 + 4x - 12 = 0

factor:

(x + 6)(x - 2) = 0

set each equal to 0:

x = -6, 2

Second way:

(x + 2)^2 = 16

take square root of both sides:

sqrt((x + 2)^2) = sqrt(16)

x + 2 = +/-4

x = 2, -6

Therefore, answer is C.

and

x + 2 = - 4

x1 = 2
x2 = - 6

Answer is C
