For me? Worse... it's like, either I'm okay, and thus get twitchy when people ask me about it, or I'm not okay, in which case I usually make it plainly obvious that I'm not okay... although if they're sincere about it I usually don't mind.
I think it makes things better. Shows that u truly care for that person, and make them feeled a sense of love. It gives them a chance to express their emotions too.

If I'm on the brink of crying & someone asks "are you okay?" then I usually I break down & cry. I think it's the fact that someone cares enough to ask & you feel their compassion. Sometimes it's best to cry to get it out. It just sucks crying in front of others.
It can be both good and bad. Good in a way that it may give you the opportunity to get something off your chest if someone wants you to talk about. But I really don't like it when someone asks if you're okay, when it's very very obvious that you're not.
