If just to simplify the expression, then:
= - 5x(x + 2y - 8)
= 40x - 5x² - 10xy

Answer: 40x - 5x² - 10xy

-6x+2y+40x
34x+2y

-5x squared -10xy+40x

Don't take my word on that, but I think that is right. Where it says squared, that means the little 2 after the x.

-5x(x + 2y - 8)
= -5x*x - 5x*2y + 5x*8 (* = multiply)
= -5x^2 - 10xy + 40x

You distribute:
-5x(x) + -5x(2y) +5x(8) = -5x^2 -10xy + 40x

distribute the -5x through the parentheses::

-5x times x + -5x times 2y + -5x times -8 =

-5xx + -10xy + 40x

the -5xx is x squared

distrubute -5x to each term so: -5x times x is -5x^2, -5x times 2y is -10xy, and -5x times -8 is 40x. Therefore the answer is:

-5x^2-10xy+40x
