Ms Wong had read about the new tree and said she thought the mainland candidate looked beautiful, but she was hesitant when told it was not healthy.

Another resident, surnamed Chan, said that instead of moving a new tree to the village, the government should allow them to pick an existing tree in the village.

Although they could not perform the traditional ritual, Mr Covarrubias found it a good experience.
