香港是位於中國東南沿海的一個小島，本是寂寂無名之地，後來逐漸發展成為國際知名的大都市，也是近百年間的事。在此以前，這地區甚至連一個固定的名稱也沒有。唐代的時候，「屯門」就是最先代表香港及其鄰近地區的地名。至於「香港」的名稱，最早見於中國典籍的記載，是在明朝萬曆年間郭棐編修的《粵大記》之內，但只是指島上局部地區而言，整座島的名稱還沒有提及。





有關香港得名的傳說



香港之得名，歷來有許多不同的解釋。有人說是清朝嘉慶年間，有一個名叫香姑的女海盜，曾佔據了今天的香港島作為根據地，後人因而稱本地區為香港。此外，有人認為在今日香港仔附近，從前有一道大瀑布，相傳就是《新安縣志》所載「新安八景」之一的「鰲洋甘瀑」。瀑布的水質甘香，故人們稱之為「香江」，往來的船舶都愛在這裏汲水飲用。後來「香江」就演變為全島的名稱。另據古老傳說，今日銅鑼灣天後廟前，以前曾安放了一座從遠地漂來的紅香爐，廟後的山崗因而稱為「紅香爐山」，而廟前的海灣亦喚作「紅香爐港」。其後，「紅香爐港」轉為全島的名稱，叫做香港島。
