NOTES:
=====((1, Types))=====
Actually this type of sentances is defining clause.
The clause after the wh-words like 'whose' 'where' 'that' is to describe the noun before.
The clause is essential to the whole sentance. Omitting it might cause misunderstanding.
No commas are needed in this case.
(Compared with non-defining clause, where commas are usually needed)
(The clause after the wh-words is not too esential.)
(e.g. Mr Donald Tsang, who is the Hong Kong Chief Executive, said he would get the job done. )
=====((2, Retraction))=====
In some cases, the wh-words can be omitted without changing the original meaning of the sentances.
e.g. (* words in blanklets are omittable)
7. There are times (where) we were in great danger.
8. He said something else (that is) totally nonsense.
0. Mr Tsang, (who is) the Hong Kong Chief Executive, said he would get the job done.
In some particular cases, the verbs in the clauses can even be changed to other participles form, to further retract the sentances.
e.g.
original: The man who stands over there was a farmer.
newform: The man standing over there was a farmer.
original: Every year a large number of tourists come to visit the State Apartments of Windsor Castle which is built up by foreigners.
newform: Every year a large number of tourists come to visit the State Apartments of Windsor Castle built up by foreigners.
If the verb in the original clause is talking about an active action, change it to present participle (v-ing); if it's talking about a passive action, change it to past participle instead (v-ed).
