Hong Kong was reunified to its mother country

After negotiations between China and Britain over Hong Kong the whole of Hong Kong was returned to China. China, however, agreed that the capitalist economic system and the basic way of life in Hong Kong was to remain basically unchanged for at least 50. Hong Kong is under mainland Chinese sovereignty, but it is a Special Administrative Region with its own currency, its own postal system, its own immigration laws (and a border between it and the rest of China).
