if I were to...
If I were to go abroad, I would go to England.(如果我要去外國,我要去英國。
If I had ...
If I had money enough, I could buy the house.(假如我有足夠的錢,我就能買這房子:事實上現在我沒有夠的錢)
所以:If I had a dog, I would(若我有隻狗,我就會...:現在根本沒有狗)
而If I were to have a dog, I would...(要是我會有隻狗,我就會...:說話者根本不打算,或想不可能有隻狗)

Even if England were to win the next two matches, Germany would still be three points ahead.(就算英格蘭連勝下兩場,德國仍領先三分:英格蘭連勝下兩場是對未來假設的想像)又如:If we were to offer you the job, would you take it?(要是我們會給你這份工作,你們上任嗎?:給你這份工作,是說話者對將來假設的想像)
