I have a question about a "freedom of speech" issue.?

I would like to write a letter to the editor for our local newspaper about something controversial (won't mention it here). Do you think it would draw negative attention about me from my employer or no?

I'll reply as a Journalist first:
Just write your letter and ask the editor to "cover your name" He can do that, it's part of his job to protect "sources"
As a Company CEO I can tell you:
If you worry about the consequences, try and sound your boss out on the argument. If there is nothing "insulting or improper" in your request, and you work for a "normal" company you're OK. If they are intelligent they will appreciate your initiative.
As a Sociologist:
you have excellent social instincts. be careful not to stamp too heavily on your neighbours toes, they might not understand.
Good luck

ps "freedom of speech", means you can say what you want, within the law. It is not a "blanket" for other people's reaction. Once "said" you shall have to stick to your guns or step down and apologize (not pleasent, requires guts and an honest face).

Freedom of speech does not protect you from negative opinion. If you are willing to say something you have to be willing to deal with the consequences.

Unless the issue has something to do with your employer, rightfully they shouldn't be affected by their employee's personal opinion.

But we're all human, and some might take it the wrong way if somehow your opinion is very controversial and he disagrees with it or so.

I guess it really depends on that person itself. Some are open minded enough to accept that everyone can have their own opinion and more importantly, anything that has nothing to do with your job shouldn't matter at all.

Others are not...

But legally, I don't think your employer can fire you on grounds that you spoke out your opinion on something controversial. No way they can do that.

I think you have to assume that everyone will read it and further assume that some people will not react favorably .. while others may think it's great.

My advice: be practical; if you can't afford to lose your job or prospects for advancement maybe it's not a great idea to sound off on that great idea of yours just now. Chances are it will not really change the world anyway.

I hate giving this kind of advice but these are challenging times and I hate to see anyone put behind the eight ball just to sound off about a pet peeve.

Depends on the issue and whether your employer shares your views.

it all depends on your employer. does he/she think the same way you think about this controversial thing? but anyway, he cant really do anything bad to you because you are protected to voice your opinion protected by the first amendment. i hope this helps you.

It could. If you believe it you should write it, if you write it you should be ready to stand behind it 100%

yes you could

It could draw negative attention and it really isnt freedom of speech, your employer can fire/hire anyone anytime. However you dont have to use your real or full name and that could get your story out without the controversy
