The reasons that Somalia is drier than Malaysia although both countries are located near the equator:


Physical factors:

a. Somalia has a continental climate, which is dry and hot. Malaysia has a marine climate, which is humid and cool.

b. In Somalia, the trade winds are offshore, which are dry. However, in Malaysia, the trade winds are onshore, which are moist.

c. Somalia is located in leeward slope, the air there is dry as most of the moisture is being blocked by the mountains in the North.

d. Somalia is located near the Sahel dessert, which is very dry.


Cultural factors:

a. War and conflicts are frequent in Somalia, massive deforestation results in increase of evaporation, decrease of interception and hence infilration. So, this makes Somalia very dry.
