I think that friend is very similar to classmate. However, the relationship between you and your friends is much closer than that between you and your classmates. You may share your experience, feelings, or whatever with your friends. But you never share those kind of personal things with your classmate if he/her is just your classmate.
Apart from this, you may make friends with your classmates through studying and communication at school.
