Why hydrogen chloride dissolved in methylbenzene reacts with ammonia to give ammonium chloride?

hydrogen chloride is acidic while ammonia is basic/ alkaline. They combines to form salts. However, the reaction needs moisture. Complete dry reactants will not react.HCl + NH3 --> NH4Cl
