Defining Clause
1)to say exactly which people/things we are describing
2)helps us define who/what we are talking about
3)use "who" for people and "which" for things
Structure:.....who/which.....
Examples:
The ladder began to slip. I was standing on it.
The ladder which I was standing on it began to slip.
The policeman was hurt. He reported the accident.
The policeman who reported the accident was hurt.
Non-defining relative clause
1) to give extra information when we already know who/ what we are describing
2)seperate by two commas from the rest of the sentence
3)use "who" for people and "which" for things

Examples:
Sandy sits next to me. She has long hair.
Sandy, who has long hair, sits next to me.
The 8:15 train was late today. It is usually very punctual.
The 8:15 train, which is usually very punctual, was late today.
