If your budget is only $1600,then I suggest you to buy iPod NANO(iPod cost at least $1980) and there are still 3 choices:4GB version,8GB version and a "product"version(special edition with red in color for charity uses)
4GB:$1150
8GB:$1550

NANO in enough for simple uses(listen to tones of music and watch photos if needed)
It also have the functions of iPod Classic like watching videos,so if your budget is $1600,I suggest you to buy an iPod NANO instead of an iPod Classic
About the monitor problem,it's enough to watch clear videos,no need to worry.
