There is coronary microvascular dysfunction, and there is coronary small vessel disease. I'm not sure which you are referring to so..

The first is aggravated by coronary arteries that spasm, (also referred to as Prinzmetal's angina) thereby cutting off blood flow to the heart muscle, sometimes causing a heart attack. It is treated with calcium channel blockers and/or nitrates.

The latter is when the coronary vessels are very small, and because of their small diameter in relation to the part of the heart that it "feeds" can cause someone to feel angina with exertional activity. It can be concerning also as minimal plaque build-up in the arteries can really diminish blood flow thereby exacerbating the problem. Depending on the cardiologist and the patient's risk factors for coronary artery disease, aggressive risk factor modification will be the plan.

Hope this helps.
