Of a rectangle, yes...
A(area) = l (length) times w (width).

For other figures, it tends to be "or what."

yes, your definition would fit for rectangle (a square is also a rectangle, just that all the sides are the same in a square). however, area really is how much is covered in a 2-dimensional point of view by a figure.

a circle isn't necessarily length times width, it's "pi" times the ((radius)^2)

Rectangle: Area = Length X Width
Parallelogram Area = Base X Height
Triangle Area = 1/2 of the base X the height
