A27 Reaction of Glycerin with Solid Potassium Permanganate
Description
One portion of a sample of potassium permanganate is ground finely. Both the coarse and the fine portions are placed in evaporating dishes side by side. Glycerin is added to both dishes at the same time for comparison of the reaction rates. Several reaction products are formed--potassium manganate, manganese dioxide, and manganese oxide. The equation below is for just one of several reactions that take place.
Equation
14 KMnO4 + 4 C3H5(OH)3 --> 7 K2CO3 + 7 Mn2O3 + 5 CO2 + 16 H2O
