In over 20 years in the U.S. Navy and having been in over 30 countries (stationed in 3) and some more than once, I picked up the following languages (so I could get something to eat, not get lost and carry on a decent conversation): Spanish, Vietnamese, Japanese, Italian, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, Cantonese, Arabic, Hindi. Of these, I was FAIRLY fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, Japanese and Italian.
My grandparents/parents/aunt/uncle were from Finland and as a young boy I spent some time with my grandmother who could speak very little English, so I learned Finn, but never heard it spoken since 1955, so I've forgotten a lot.
My French was not understood in France (I didn't speak 'perfect' French), but was easily understood in Tunisia (and Mauritius) and I was thought to be Italian because I spoke French with an Italian accent.
