Here is the question:
A ship goes to the north first for 5 m, then goes to the east for 12 m. It travels with a constant speed of 3.4 m/s.
Find the magnitude of the average velocity of the ship.

Velocity is a vector, so you need to calculate the displacement of the ship first.
Using Pyth. Theory, so east you can find out it is 13.
and then, you need to calculate the total time of travel.
(5+12)/3.4=5 sec

so, the average velocity of the ship = 13/5 =2.6 ms-1
