Try to get x by itself by removing the 4 and the negative sign on the left hand side.

To do this, we want to use opposite operations.

For example, since you are "dividing" the 4 on the left hand side, you can get rid of it by "multiplying" by 4.

Also, since you are "multiplying" by -1 on the left hand side, you can get rid of it by "dividing" by -1.

You must perform these actions on BOTH sides to keep the equation balanced.

-x/4 = 12 (original)

4*(-x/4) = 4*12 (multiply 4 to both sides)

-x = 48 (notice that the 4's on the left hand side cancels)

(-x)/(-1) = 48/(-1) (divide by -1 on both sides)

x = -48 (notice that the negative 1's cancel)

x / 4 = - 12
x = - 48

So you multiply 4 on both sides to get rid of the fraction,so its -x=48 then u multiply both sides by -1 since the variable cannot be negative and then u get -48

x = -48

-(-48)=48

48/4=12

-x/4 = 12
-x/4 (4) = 12(4)
-x = 48
*-x/-1 = 48/-1
x = -48

*-x = -1x = -1(x)
So,
-x/-1 = 48/-1
x = -48

Multiple 4 on both sides. Then divide by -1.
x=-48
2007-12-31 1:51 pm
x=-48

-x/4=12
4(-x/4)=(12)4
-x=48
/-1 /-1
x=-48

multiply both sides by 4 to cancel out the 4 in the denominator in -x/4...then divide by -1 to get rid of the negative...final answer is -48..hope this helped =D
