It was two o'clock in the morning. Trying not to make any sound, I walked carefully. As I passed my parents' room, I heard somebody talking. I put my ears close to the door, wanting to hear more.

"…I promise I will return it. Probably no more than a few years." Mother besought. "Please."

I never heard my mother talking like that; she always spoke in a tone of command.
