In a bag there are some $1 coins and som $2 coins. If there are altogether 60 coins and the total value of the coins is $108, what is the difference between the number of $1 coins and som $2 coins?

Let there are x $1 coins and y $2 coins
x + y = 60, i.e. x = 60 - y
x + 2y = 108
60 - y + 2y = 108
60 + y = 108
y = 48
x = 60 - 48 = 12
y - x = 48 - 12 = 36

Let x be the numbers of coins $1, then and y be the numbers of coins$2.
Because there are together are 60 coins and total value of the coins is 108 dollars,
so the solve equation are x+y=60 and x+2y=108.
Solve: x+y=60----(1) and
x+2y=108----(2)
From(1), x+y=60
x=60-y-----(3)
Put (3) into (2), we have
x+2y=108
(60-y)+2y=108
60+y=108
y=48-----(4)
Put (4) into (1), we have
x+48=60
x=12
The numbers of coins$1 is 12, and the numbers of coins$2 is 48.
The difference between the numbers of coins$1and the numbers of coins$2 are 48-12=36 , compare the numbers of coins$1 less than the numbers of coins$2 are 36.

x + y = 60  ... (1)
x + 2y = 108 ... (2)

From (1), y = 60 - x ... (3)
Sub. (3) into (2),
x + 2(60 - x) = 108
x + 120 - 2x = 108
-x = -12
x = 12

Sub. x = 12 into (3),
y = 60 - 12
= 48

∴The difference between the number of $1 coins and the number of $2 coins
= 48 - 12
= 36

imangine all of the coins are $2 coins. There will be totally$120 in the bag. But the total value of the coins is only $108. The only way to decrese these $12 is to change some of the $2 coins into $1.

After we change 12 coins into $1, we'll get12 $1 coins and48 $2 coins.Therefore,the diffrence between kinds of coins is 36.
