What is American people's view towards Marxism?

I resent "teacher" Lee's statements that Americans are ignorant of Marxism and Communism. On the contrary, I (and many others that I know) are quite familiar with the concept(s).

The original ideal behind Marxism had some merit. However, the biggest failing in the theory is that it failed to take into account human nature.

Marx' quote "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" (Critique) sounds great! But humanity is, by nature, competitive and greedy and therefore, it doesn't work.

Under Marxist theory, people are also supposed to be the same -- but that will not happen either.

I challenge you to look at your own country! Do you see party officials with more privileges than others? Can some people drive cars and not others?

That is not to say that Capitalism is the answer either. However, capitalism does pander to human nature and at least does it openly. It recognizes basic human greed and competitiveness.

Communism has also failed in almost every country. The Soviet Union fell apart; your own country is embracing capitalism. I think about the only "true" communist countries left would be Cuba and North Korea.

So ... a "common" American's view of Marxism. Hope it helps!

I am a Chinese student. I want to know what the commonly held American views towards Marxism and Communism are?
Our text books of course always speak highly of our regime,
but I'm still confused about what other peoples' opinion about it may be.
Please give me a short introduction on this topic and tell me some of your thoughts.

As for Americans views towards Marxism and Communism - from my experience most of them are completely ignorant of the subjects.
