Education is the indoctrination of those ideas and methods of societal interaction that broader society (or the societal elites) deems important to know.

In my opinion, Education is the intense study of academic, socital, and functional skills.
It differs from training, in as much as, training points a person in the direction they should go, by teaching them what to do, and when to do it.
while education allows one to be more intuitive, and make choices based on what circumstances he/she is faced with.
Education relies on ones critical thinking abilities, which enable you to better handle, and/or see, the changes your actions have created.
to paraphrase Dr. Niem Akbar: " A trained dog will stand on his hind legs, and beg for a treat. While an educated dog will tip over a garbage can to eat.

Education is unearthing what already IS in this world. Well, it's not really just about memorization and maths, it arms you with what you need in life. Not necessarily the name, the dates and sports but the skills and values these areas teach you like a sharpening your memory, time management, reasoning and how to think strategically. :)
