For fluid (liquid or gas, NOT solid), hot particle will diffuse ('flow') from a place of higher temperature to a place of lower temperature to replace the cold particle. This is convection.

An example is the application of air conditioner. Air particle at higher place is cooled and particle at bottom will replace the cold particle.The hot particle is in turn cooled. That's why the room will eventually get cooled.

The efficiency of air conditioner will be lower if it is place at the bottom of the room because hot particle tends to diffuse to higher places. Convection will be extremely hard in this case.
