What do you choose as a Christmas gift for your girlfriend?

I come from China,
I want to know more about American culture.

I know the importance of Chirstmas, which has a same importance as our Spring Festival.
I want to know,
what do you typically give someone as a present that day,
to your parents, to your boyfriend or girlfriend, or your son, or your daughter, etc.
then what is your idea on celebrating that wonderful day?

I haven't been to the USA before, but maybe years later, after my graduation from my high school, I can get a chance to visit that Great country.

Thank you for your answers, SINCERELY!

If there is anything that I can help you, especially problems about China, do tell me and I'll help you sincerely as well!
Good Luck!

PS. is there anything wrong in those sentences above? I'm merely an English learner, hoho ^.^

I don't see much wrong with your English Miho. :)

I'm Canadian, but it's pretty much the same thing when on this topic, hehe.

When choosing a gift, what you're looking for is something that you'll think she'll enjoy and at the same time it will somehow represent the feelings you have for her. Some people give jewelery; such as a necklace, watch or ring.

It really depends on how deep your relationship is and what type of girl your girlfriend is. If she likes simple things and is sentimental, then something homemade might be nice, but if she likes material things, then a lovely necklace or pendant might do.

If I am not wrong, there is noting wrong with your english. You're doing great.
Gifts for any important person in your life, you can simply give them anything that they would appreciate or like. Many americans just stick to something so simple as a gift-card. That way you can't go wrong with the present. I am not a fan of gift-cards. I like to give gifts that mean something. I have reasons behind my gifts.

Your English is wonderful. Christmas is very commercial here now, and has been since the 1940's. Parents usually get article of clothing or maybe a small appliance or tool. Girlfriend some jewlery or stuffed animal, or let her tell you what she wants. Kids basically will get as much of what they ask for as you can afford - games, toys, bikes, electronics, etc. Happy Holidays!

you try give give someone something that:
1) they could use, but would never get for themselves
2) they need, but cannot afford to buy
or
3) something so that they will always think of you when they look at it.
參考: LOL your question used better English than those of some of the native born english speakers on Yahoo.

Well I'm from Australia and I assume our xmas is similar to the USA. We get up early and open our presents and then have a big champagne breakfast with our friends. We then have a family lunch of ham, cold chicken, salads and seafood. We usually sleep in the afternoon and then rise again at night to eat the leftovers. We usually give presents to each other that are things that we thinks our friends will like such as chocolates, books, dvds etc. Christmas is more of a time for sharing with family rather than buying lots of expensive gifts.

You're english is perfect. I am impressed with the english you use.
The best gift for any American is an expensive gift. Thats what we want. Otherwise you are cheap. There is nothing worse than being cheap in America. The only thing worse would be being a communist.
