The effects of obesity among teenagers in Hong Kong [262 Words]

Reports have it that the obesity amongst teenagers in developed cities are becoming a major concern, nonetheless Hong Kong suffers as victim due to the increased availability of what is termed ‘ convenient foods ‘ . This is partly due to the fact that Hong Kong is a fast paced society, teenagers in this generation are adapting to this culture, and the average dining time in Hong Kong is of world record fast! The two supplement each other thus contributing to a huge problem of obesity amongst local teenagers.

Obese teenagers suffer from many heart related problems, cholesterol problems and diabetes. Encountering these illnesses at such an early state impedes healthy growth and most of all has huge adverse impacts on their career development and social life. Research shows that obesity can be inherited and has an impact on overall fertility rate as well. For a healthy growth of our population, schools, family and the government should increase awareness of problems from teenage obesity and alleviate this issue before it becomes too late.

Other than that, the medical liabilities will only increase as more people are victims of related diseases. Not only will this be a burden on the teenagers in the future, but a problem for the government’s medical budget and resources.

With all being said, teenage obesity has social and economical costs that are obvious and deadly. Through different approaches such as mass media, education and awareness, we must deal with this issue and avert the risks of it at all costs before it becomes a cyclical irresolvable problem.
