In the Western Christian Churches, the Christmas season liturgically begins on Christmas Eve. For many Western European religions, Saint Nicolas (Santa) is the focus of Christmas. The Mass of the Vigil is said in the late afternoon or early evening hours of December 24. The Christmas season continues through until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on the Sunday following the Solemnity of the Epiphany.

Many Roman Catholics and Anglicans traditionally celebrate a midnight Mass at midnight on Christmas Eve, which is held in churches throughout the world, marking the beginning of Christmas Day. A popular joke is to ask what time Midnight Mass starts, but in recent years some churches have started their "Midnight" Mass as early as 7 P.M. Other Catholic churches hold a candlelight service which is typically held earlier in the evening. These often feature dramatizations of the Nativity. Similar worship services are held in many Protestant churches on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day.

In the early evening, many Methodistss come to their church to celebrate Holy Communion with their families. The mood is very solemn, and often the only visible light is the Advent Wreath, and the candles upon the Lord's Table.

The Nine Lessons and Carols broadcast annually from King's College, Cambridge on Christmas Eve has established itself as one of the signs that Christmas has begun in the United Kingdom. It is broadcast to many parts of the world via the BBC World Service.

My family was very poor and we couldn't even afford to have a meal in McDonnal, but last christmas eve we had a big meal in KFC. Since I hadn't been KFC before, I felt very excited. The chicken was really good and I had never have such a tasty chicken in my life. After a good meal, my dad suggested to go to see a movie but we couldn't afford to buy three tickets as we only had 50 dollar left. We went shopping instead and my dad bought me a very expensive pencil case which was 20 dollar. I was very happy and I wish I will have a wonderful Christmas Eve in this year too .

What People usually do at Christmas Eve
This Christmas Eve, my family and I are going to celebrate Christmas Eve together. We will gather around to have a big dinner. We will eat turkey, Christmas pudding and drink some Egg Nog. We will share our food with some poor people too. After dinner, we will sing some Christmas songs together. We will exchange Christmas gifts and put them under the Christmas tree. We will not open the gifts until Boxing Day, which is on the 26th December.
At mid night, my family and I will go to a nearby church to attend a midnight mass to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. After the mass, we will go back home and have a good night rest.
