Most of the glucose will be converted to starch for storge in plants. Glucose is soluble, but starch is insoluble in water. How will it affect the water potential of the cells if glucose is not converted to starch?

If glucose is stored in plant cells without being converted to starch, the cells become hypertonic cells (i.e. the cells' water potential will be lowered or the cells contain more solute (glucose) than any cellular structures). This will affect the normal metabolism of the cells since water located surrounding will be withdrawn to those hypertonic cells. Water may not be effectively transported to any other regions requiring it. Some of tissues may die of dehydration due to not enough water supply.
