Water pollution is largely caused by human activities. Water quality is affected when waste products such as human waste, sewage, pesticide, and detergent were not properly processed before releasing into the ocean.
There are natural pollutants as well which include precipitation run-off, lava, and ash.
Impacts of water pollution include,
1. Birds can get covered in oil-waste as they pass by an oil field. This oil coating is unwashable and could prevent their natural insulation and eventually freezing them to death.
2. Disruption of the food-chain.
Oil by-products are lethal to algae, an important source of food for small fish and aquatic species. Because algae is at the bottom of the acquatic food chain, disruption of algae entails disruption of the entire acquatic food chain.
3. Destruction of mangrove marshes and wetlands. Apart from the impacts of continuous land destruction, river and ocean pollutions also affect these ecological regions head-on.
4.Polluted rivers are connected to human settlement which pose health risks to those who live in the vicinity. Engage in activities that come in contact with polluted water such as swimming, can cause infections of the eyes, ears, respiratory system, and skin.
5. Loss of leisure enjoyment of the waterfront as its beauty dims.
