Dear writing expert:

For a Speech

In a few minutes, we were honoured to invite Mr. Lee to give us a short speech about our Hotel's background.

(Revised by tutor)
In a few minutes, we were honoured to have Mr. Lee give us about our Hotel's background.

Why change (to give) into infinitive (give), I dont understand.

Pls help and explain.

✔ 最佳答案
這是出於have這個動詞,若have用作cause(要或安排(某人)做(某事)時),其句形是have+noun+infinitive,如:He had the bouncers throw them out of the club.(他叫保安人員把他們轟出了俱樂部)
所以,tutor改了你句子後,就變成:we were honoured to have Mr. Lee give us...
希望你明白!

想補充,上面朋友說:we say we invite someone but not 'invite someone to' do something that's 'chinese English' !這說法並不對,Cambridge Dictionary Online就有以下例子:[ object to infinitive] Her family invited me to stay with them for a few weeks.

have someone 'verb' something is a kind of phrase . Although it is actually ' have sb to 'verb' something but 'to' is ignored .Like we say 'we see someone do something ' actually 'to' is in the sentence but it is ignored . One more example .A boy called John...actually 'who is' is between a boy and John but it is usually ignored .(Of course , in the case have/see someone 'verb' something , 'to' must be ignored )
